How Does a Nerve Get Pinched?

Pinched nerve is a generic term that refers to any injury involving compression or impingement on a group of nerves, resulting in pain, numbness or tingling. It’s often the result of a damaged or misaligned joint, which then obstructs the nerve pathway in that area. When the impingement progresses to the point where it irritates the nerve, you feel pain anywhere along that nerve.

If you have a pinched nerve in the neck, you will generally feel the pain in your neck—but it will often radiate into your shoulder, arm, hand and even your fingers. In this case, a more accurate diagnosis would be brachial neuralgia because the compression affects the brachial plexus, which is a huge group of nerves leaving the neck and running into the shoulders, arms and hands. Sciatica is this same type of compression of the sciatic plexus, causing pain down into the leg and foot.

The Chiropractic Approach

Chiropractic care is extremely effective at restoring the proper alignment and mobility of the joint, which removes the pressure on the nerve pathway. When this pathway is opened up normally again, the nerves can pass through without restriction or irritation. When the impingement and pressure on the nerves have been corrected, your pain is eliminated.

In some cases, a single adjustment can provide immediate relief. In other cases, there is swelling associated with this condition that takes some time to subside and full relief may take a little longer. But in either case, chiropractic care mechanically corrects the underlying cause of your pain rather than simply treating symptoms. When the impingement is repaired, the injury is corrected and your pain is gone—and stays gone!
