I hear the term "pinched nerve" often in my Greenville chiropractic practice. While it may not be a formal medical diagnosis, it is commonly understood and accurately describes what happens when pressure is placed on a nerve by surrounding tissue, whether that is bone, cartilage, disc material, or inflamed soft tissue.

Other terms for the same general condition include nerve compression, impinged nerve, compression neuropathy, and radiculopathy. Regardless of what you call it, the result is the same: interference with normal nerve function that can produce a wide range of symptoms beyond simple pain.

Auto accidents are one of the most common causes of pinched nerves. The trauma that a collision inflicts on the cervical and lumbar spine can compress nerve roots at multiple levels simultaneously, and the symptoms that result do not always appear immediately.

Why Car Accidents Cause Pinched Nerves

The force of a collision can misalign vertebrae, herniate or bulge discs, and inflame the surrounding soft tissue all at once. Any of these changes can place pressure on the nerve roots that exit the spine at the affected levels.

The cervical spine is particularly vulnerable in rear-end and front-end collisions where whiplash forces are greatest, and the nerve roots in the neck supply sensation and motor function to the shoulders, arms, and hands. Lumbar nerve root compression from a car accident can produce symptoms that travel into the hips, legs, and feet.

Symptoms of a Pinched Nerve After a Car Accident

Some symptoms of nerve involvement are obvious. Others are more subtle but can be just as debilitating over time if not addressed. Common symptoms of pinched nerves following an auto accident include:

  • Numbness and tingling in the arms and hands or less commonly the legs and feet

  • A prickling sensation or pins and needles feeling

  • Burning or hot and cold sensations in the extremities

  • Muscle spasms or weakness in the affected area

  • Pain that radiates into an arm or leg

  • Shooting pain through the shoulder or arm

  • The feeling that a hand or foot has fallen asleep

  • Involuntary twitching or uncontrolled muscle movements

  • Increased sensitivity to temperature in the extremities

These symptoms may occur alongside whiplash, neck pain, back pain, and headaches, all of which are common post-accident complaints. The combination of multiple injuries can complicate the clinical picture, which is why a thorough examination is so important.

Why Early Evaluation Matters

Nerves heal more slowly than muscles and ligaments. The longer a nerve remains compressed, the more time it has to become sensitized and the longer recovery takes. Patients who are evaluated and treated promptly after a car accident consistently achieve better outcomes than those who wait until symptoms become severe or chronic.

There is also a documentation consideration. If you are pursuing a personal injury claim, the symptoms of nerve involvement that appear in your examination record from your first visit are an important part of establishing the full extent of your injuries. Waiting weeks to seek care makes it harder to connect those symptoms to the accident.

How We Diagnose and Treat Pinched Nerves After an Accident

At Brown Chiropractic Center, every new auto accident patient receives a comprehensive examination that includes orthopedic and neurological testing specifically designed to identify nerve involvement. I assess your reflexes, sensation, and muscle strength in addition to evaluating your spinal alignment and range of motion. Digital x-rays are taken when indicated to identify any structural changes that may be contributing to nerve compression.

Treatment is then targeted at relieving the source of the compression. Depending on your examination findings, care may include cervical or lumbar chiropractic adjustments to correct spinal misalignment and relieve pressure on affected nerve roots, Cox disc distraction for disc-related nerve compression, cervical or lumbar traction for additional decompression, cold laser therapy to reduce inflammation around the compressed nerve, and high voltage galvanism for pain control and muscle relaxation.

Get Evaluated After Your Accident
