Arthritis is one of the most common conditions Dr. Jeff Brown sees in his Greenville chiropractic office, particularly among patients over 50. The pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility that arthritis produces can significantly limit daily activity and quality of life. While there is no cure for arthritis, chiropractic care is one of the most effective conservative approaches available for managing its symptoms, slowing its progression, and helping patients stay active and functional for as long as possible.

Dr. Brown has been providing chiropractic care for arthritis patients in Greenville for over 40 years. His approach focuses on maintaining proper joint function and spinal alignment, reducing inflammation, and keeping patients moving with as little pain as possible.

Types of Arthritis We Help

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is the result of the gradual wear and breakdown of cartilage in the joints over time. As cartilage deteriorates, the bones of the joint begin to rub against each other, producing pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion. Osteoarthritis most commonly affects the spine, hips, knees, and hands and is one of the leading causes of chronic pain in older adults.

Spinal osteoarthritis, sometimes called degenerative joint disease, affects the facet joints of the spine and frequently occurs alongside degenerative disc disease. The combination of disc height loss and facet joint degeneration can narrow the spaces through which spinal nerves exit the spine, producing nerve compression and radiating pain in addition to local spinal pain.

Cervical and Lumbar Arthritis

Arthritis in the cervical spine produces neck pain, stiffness, and headaches and can cause nerve compression that refers pain, numbness, and tingling into the arms and hands. Arthritis in the lumbar spine produces low back pain and stiffness and can compress the nerves that produce sciatica and leg pain. Both conditions are extremely common and both respond well to chiropractic management.

How Chiropractic Care Helps Arthritis

Chiropractic care does not reverse the structural changes of arthritis but it addresses the functional consequences of those changes in ways that produce meaningful pain relief and improved mobility. When arthritic joints lose their normal motion, the surrounding muscles tighten, adjacent joints compensate, and the entire affected area becomes progressively more restricted and painful. Restoring as much normal motion as possible to the arthritic joints and the spinal segments around them interrupts that cycle and keeps patients functional.

Treatment for arthritis at Brown Chiropractic Center is gentle and adapted to the specific needs of the arthritic patient. Depending on your condition, care may include low-force chiropractic adjustments using Activator technique, gentle hands-on adjustments where appropriate, cold laser therapy to reduce joint inflammation and promote tissue healing, therapeutic ultrasound for deep joint warming and inflammation control, cervical or lumbar traction for nerve compression related to arthritic changes, and high voltage galvanism for pain control.

Managing Arthritis Long Term

Arthritis is a chronic condition that benefits from ongoing management rather than a single course of treatment. Many arthritis patients find that regular chiropractic care on a maintenance basis keeps their symptoms manageable, slows the progression of their condition, and allows them to stay active and independent longer than they might otherwise. Dr. Brown will discuss realistic long-term management options with you based on the severity of your condition and your personal goals.

What to Expect

Your first visit begins with a thorough consultation and examination. Dr. Brown will review your history, assess your affected joints and spinal segments, and take x-rays when indicated to understand the extent of the arthritic changes before recommending any treatment.

He will be honest with you about what chiropractic care can and cannot accomplish for your specific degree of arthritis and will work with you to develop a realistic and effective management plan.
