A car accident happens in seconds. What you do in the minutes, hours, and days that follow can have a significant impact on both your health and your ability to recover financially if you were not at fault. After more than 40 years of treating auto accident patients in Greenville, I have seen firsthand how the decisions people make immediately after a collision affect their outcomes, both in terms of how completely they recover and how well their personal injury case is documented.

Here is what to do.

What to Do Immediately After a Car Accident in Greenville, SC

At the Scene

Call 911

If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately. Even if injuries seem minor, a police report creates an official record of the accident that is important for any insurance or personal injury claim that follows. Do not assume the other driver will cooperate or that the details will be easy to reconstruct later. Get a report on file.

Stay at the Scene

Do not leave until law enforcement arrives and the situation is properly documented. Leaving the scene of an accident, even a minor one, can create legal complications regardless of who was at fault.

Check on Everyone Involved

Check on the other driver and any passengers. If anyone appears seriously injured do not move them unless there is an immediate safety risk such as fire. Moving an accident victim with a spinal injury can make things significantly worse.

Exchange Information

Get the following from every driver involved:

  • Full name and contact information

  • Driver's license number

  • Vehicle registration and license plate number

  • Insurance company name and policy number

Document the Scene

Use your phone to photograph everything before vehicles are moved if it is safe to do so. Take photos of all vehicles from multiple angles, the position of the vehicles in the road, any visible damage, road conditions, traffic signals, and any skid marks or debris. These photos can be critically important later.

Get Witness Information

If anyone witnessed the accident get their name and phone number. Independent witness accounts can significantly strengthen a personal injury claim.

Be Careful What You Say

Do not apologize, admit fault, or make statements about how you feel at the scene. Adrenaline is flowing and you may not feel injured in the moment even if you are. Statements made at the scene can be used against you later. Stick to the facts when speaking with law enforcement.

In the Hours After the Accident

Notify Your Insurance Company

Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible regardless of who was at fault. Most policies require prompt notification. Stick to the factual details of what happened and avoid speculating about injuries or fault.

Do Not Post on Social Media

This is important. Anything you post about the accident on social media can be used against you in a personal injury claim. A photo of you smiling at a family dinner two days after the accident could be used to argue you were not seriously injured. Keep the accident off social media entirely until any claims are fully resolved.

Monitor How You Feel

This is where a lot of people make a critical mistake. They feel okay immediately after the accident, assume they were not hurt, and move on. The adrenaline response that follows a collision can mask significant soft tissue damage, nerve compression, and spinal injury for hours or even days. Whiplash, disc injuries, and pinched nerves frequently do not produce noticeable symptoms until 24 to 72 hours after the impact.

Pay attention to any of the following in the hours and days after your accident:

Any of these symptoms warrant prompt evaluation. Do not wait to see if they resolve on their own.

Get a Chiropractic Evaluation as Soon as Possible

This is the most important step and the one most people delay or skip entirely. Getting evaluated by an experienced chiropractor within 24 to 72 hours of your accident is one of the best decisions you can make for both your recovery and your personal injury case.

Here is why it matters on both fronts.

For Your Health

Auto accident injuries that are identified and treated early heal faster and more completely than injuries that are left untreated while you wait to see how you feel. Soft tissue inflammation that is addressed in the first days after an accident is easier to manage than chronic scar tissue and compensatory movement patterns that develop when injuries go unaddressed. The window for optimal recovery is real and it closes faster than most people realize.

For Your Claim

A gap between the date of your accident and the date you first sought treatment raises questions about the severity of your injuries in any personal injury claim. Insurance adjusters and defense attorneys will use that gap to argue that you were not seriously hurt or that your injuries were caused by something other than the accident. Getting evaluated promptly and establishing a documented treatment record from the start protects your claim.

At Brown Chiropractic Center, Dr. Jeff Brown performs a comprehensive examination from your very first visit, including a detailed history of the accident, orthopedic and neurological testing, postural and spinal assessment, and digital x-rays when indicated. Every finding is documented precisely and completely. Your evaluation is complimentary as a new patient.

Do You Need an Attorney?

You do not need to have an attorney before coming in for your evaluation. Getting evaluated and beginning treatment promptly is advisable regardless of whether you plan to pursue a personal injury claim. If you do decide to pursue a claim, having thorough medical documentation from the earliest possible date significantly strengthens your case.

If you need an attorney referral, we work with personal injury attorneys in the Greenville area and can point you in the right direction.

What About the Emergency Room?

If you have severe pain, obvious physical trauma, loss of consciousness, or any neurological symptoms like significant weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control, go to the emergency room first. Emergency medicine is equipped to rule out fractures, internal injuries, and life-threatening conditions.

What the emergency room is generally not equipped to do is evaluate and treat the soft tissue and spinal injuries that are most common in auto accidents. Whiplash, disc injuries, and nerve compression are frequently missed in emergency settings focused on ruling out more acute trauma. An ER clearance is not the same as a chiropractic evaluation, and many patients leave the ER with a clean bill of health only to develop significant symptoms in the days that follow.

A Note on Low-Speed Collisions

Do not assume that a minor fender bender means you were not injured. Low-speed rear-end collisions are among the most common causes of whiplash and cervical spine injuries. The physics of a low-speed impact can produce significant force at the neck even when vehicle damage is minimal. I see patients regularly who were involved in what felt like a minor collision and sustained injuries that took months to fully resolve.

If you were in a collision, get evaluated. The evaluation is free and it takes less than 30 minutes. There is no downside to knowing.
